Information about VastoAccording to legend, the Greek hero Diomede was reminded of Mount Histon in Corfù when he first came across Vasto, thus the historical name Histonium. The city was later called Vasto, although the story behind this name is unclear. The ancient town of Histonium was part of the Roman Empire and was later ruled by the French and then the Spanish, namely the D'Avalos family who ruled the town for centuries. The Palazzo D'Avalos is the dominant landmark in the historical centre, and stands as a symbol of the great prestige Vasto once knew. Today Palazzo D'Avalos houses an Archaeological Museum and a Picture Gallery. Other important historical sites are the castle-fortress and the churches in the town centre, some parts dating as far back as the 10th century. The Loggia Amblingh is a scenic belvedere dating back to the XVIII century; a perfect place for a stroll with a spectacular view of the sea, gulf, and surrounding hills. Vasto is a lovely scenic town with nice hotels and one of the longest, widest and cleanest sandy beaches found along the Adriatic coast. All this along with seaside walks, gelato shops and excellent traditional restaurants will make your stay in Vasto unforgettable. Last but not least, Vasto hosts many fun summer activities such as music and food festivals; plus it is home to the largest water park in South-Central Italy: "Aqualand del Vasto." | ![]() |
